Diaphragmatic breathing technique in freediving

Site adminSunday, 2 June 202498 views

A practical guide to mastering the diaphragmatic breathing technique to increase air retention and duration of stay underwater.

Diaphragmatic breathing is the foundation of correct freediving and distinguishes the experienced diver from the novice.

What is the diaphragm

The diaphragm is a large muscle that separates the chest and abdominal cavities and is primarily responsible for effective deep breathing.

How to practice this breathing

The first step - complete relaxation
Start by lying on your back and place your hand on your stomach and make sure that it is the abdomen that rises when you inhale, not the chest.

Step 2 - Deep Inhale
Inhale slowly for 6 seconds, filling the abdomen first, then the chest at the top, until you feel completely full.

Step 3 - Complete exhalation
Exhale the air slowly for 8 seconds, starting from the chest, then press the abdomen inward until the lungs are completely empty.

Recommended daily exercises

  • Breathing exercise 4-4-8 for 10 minutes daily
  • Dry hold exercise for one minute, then two minutes
  • Yoga exercises to enhance the flexibility of the rib cage

True mastery of breathing comes from regular daily practice and not from sporadic intense sessions.
