Basic movements of a diver underwater

Site adminMonday, 2 September 2024101 views

Learn the basic movements every diver needs to navigate efficiently and safely in an underwater environment.

Navigating underwater is radically different from swimming on the surface and learning the basics makes every dive more fun and less stressful.

Basic flipper strike

Alternate stroke
The most common and most efficient straight stroke. The legs move alternately and calmly.

Yield Strike
For maneuvering in tight spaces and when approaching reefs. Small circular strokes for the legs.

Direction Control

To turn the direction right or left, use your hand to direct the body, not the flippers alone. The whole body acts as a rudder.

Efficient rise and fall

For an efficient landing, bend at the waist with one powerful downward stroke of the fins. For ascent, medium upward strokes, adding air to the flotation jacket.

The ideal horizontal position

A completely horizontal position with the body parallel to the bottom gives less resistance to water and more efficient movement.

Every movement under water consumes air and energy. Efficient movement means longer and more enjoyable dives.
