How to prepare yourself for freediving competitions and what to expect in your first competition.

Freediving competitions are not just for professionals, there are categories for all levels, and participation is an experience that changes your path in the sport.

Types of freediving competitions

Vertical diving
It is measured by the depth to which the diver reaches. There are categories with and without fins and with monofins.

Horizontal diving
It is measured by the horizontal distance that the diver travels underwater in the pool and is most suitable for beginners.

How to prepare for your first competition

The training phase
Focus on technique, not numbers. A diver with good technique consistently achieves better numbers than one who exhausts himself.

Psychological readiness
Competition differs from training in terms of psychological pressure. Get used to performing in front of an audience and under formal rules.

Contest Day

  • Arriv early to acclimatize to the place
  • Avoid any intense training the day before
  • Light breakfast two hours before the competition
  • Talk with other divers to learn and build a network

The competition is a reflection of your true level and is not just a race. Participate to learn, not just to win.
