How to overcome fear and anxiety in diving and turn the challenge into a fun and enjoyable experience.
The fear of diving is more common than you imagine, and it is possible to overcome it for those who know the right path.
Fear of suffocation
The feeling that there will not be enough air or that the regulator will stop working. This fear is very common and is unfounded if you check your equipment carefully.
Fear of the depths
Feeling unsafe in deep water and this gradually disappears with training and habituation.
Fear of sea creatures
is often exaggerated. Most creatures avoid divers and run away from them.
Start in the pool
Before the sea, train in the pool until you feel completely comfortable with the equipment and breathing underwater.
Talk to your coach
Tell your coach your concerns honestly. A good coach adapts training to your needs and does not minimize your concerns.
Breathing is the solution
In moments of fear, slow, deep breathing calms the nervous system and restores your self-control.
Most fear goes away after 5 to 10 dives. Commit yourself to ten dives before judging a dive.
Fear does not mean that you are not suitable for diving, but rather it means that you are a normal human being in a new situation.
