Freediving in cold waters: challenges and secrets

Site adminMonday, 22 July 202483 views

How to adapt to cold water diving, choose the right equipment and maintain performance.

Cold water presents unique challenges, but it also provides a stronger diving response and better depths for those who are skilled at adapting to it.

How does cold affect the body

Cold strengthens the diving response because facial receptors react faster and stronger to cold water, slowing the heart more deeply.

Challenges in cold water

  • Loss of body heat consumes more energy
  • Muscles freeze quickly, impairing movement
  • Fatigue occurs faster compared to warm water

Necessary equipment

Thick Wet
For water below 15 degrees you need a 7mm or thicker wetsuit with a hat, wristbands and neoprene boots.

Closed neck suit
A suit with an integrated head prevents cold water from entering the neck, which is the area of greatest heat loss.

Gradual adaptation

  • Start with short sessions and increase the duration gradually
  • Warm water after the session speeds up recovery
  • Keep a warm drink in a thermos for post-session sipping

Cold water divers are among the strongest divers because they train in the most difficult conditions.
