Seagrass and algae

The base of the food web — seagrass feeds dugong and turtles; algae produce much of Earth’s oxygen

Ecological importance: Seagrass meadows store 10 times more carbon than tropical forest of the same area. Destroying one hectare releases carbon equal to burning 1,000 litres of oil.

Seagrasses

Flowering plants that evolved to live underwater

Seagrasses are not algae — they are true flowering plants that left land 70–100 million years ago to live underwater. They have roots and leaves and produce flowers and seeds underwater. Seagrass meadows store 10% of oceanic carbon even though they cover less than 0.2% of the seafloor. They are nurseries for juvenile fish and irreplaceable pasture for dugong and green turtles.

Macroalgae

Photosynthetic organisms more diverse than land plants

Marine macroalgae are diverse photosynthetic organisms (not plants) in three groups: green algae (Chlorophyta), brown algae (Phaeophyceae), and red algae (Rhodophyta). They produce 50–80% of Earth’s oxygen, form the base of the marine food web, and supply rare compounds used in medicine and industry.

Scientific note

Sargassum muticum, commonly known as Japanese wireweed or japweed, is a large brown seaweed of the genus Sargassum. It is native to the Western Pacific Ocean from coasts of China, South Korea, Japan, and southern Russia. During the mid-1900s, S. muticum was introduced to the Eastern Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea. In some non-native habitats, it is an invasive species due to its high growth rate and efficient dispersal.

Depth

0–25 m

Range

Red Sea • Indian Ocean • Pacific Ocean

Substrate

Hard reefs and coral edges

Ecological role

Their surfaces shelter dozens of plankton and small-invertebrate species

Scientific note

Turbinaria ornata is a tropical brown algae of the order Fucales native to coral reef ecosystems of the South Pacific. Turbinaria ornata is more commonly referred to as crowded sea bells in the US and crowned sea bells worldwide. It can quickly colonize these ecosystems due in part to its method of dispersing by detaching older and more buoyant fronds that travel on surface currents, sometimes in large rafts of many individual thalli, or fronds. Some scientists are investigating whether the increase in density of seaweeds, and a decrease in living coral density, on coral reef ecosystems indicates a change in the health of the reef, focusing studies on this particular species of brown alga.

Halimeda tuna is the type species of the genus Halimeda and the type locality is the Mediterranean Sea.
