The Red Sea — a unique ecosystem
Why is the Red Sea special?
The Red Sea is almost fully enclosed — a semi-inland sea with a narrow inlet at Bab al-Mandab, making it a unique high-salinity environment (40–42 ppt versus 35 globally). Temperatures range from 20 to 32 °C year-round.
These harsh conditions produced unique coral species adapted to high heat — a trait that makes them more resistant to climate change than reefs in other oceans.
The Red Sea receives 37 to 60 cubic centimetres of Indian Ocean water through Bab al-Mandab each year, renewing nutrients and sustaining biodiversity.

What is bleaching?
Coral depends on symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) living in its tissue and producing 90% of its food. When temperature rises more than 1–2 °C above the usual limit, these algae are expelled and the coral turns white. Bleached coral does not die immediately, but it is under severe stress and exposed to disease. If conditions return to normal within 4–6 weeks, it recovers its algae.
