Fins in Diving: The Complete Selection Guide

Site adminMonday, 24 June 2024112 views

A comprehensive comparison between the types of fins and how to choose the most suitable for your diving type and level.

Fins transform the movement of your legs in the water into effective propulsion and are, after the mask, the most impactful on the diving experience.

Types of fins

Full strap fins
An elastic band surrounds the entire foot and is easy to wear, light and suitable for recreational diving.

Open pocket fins
allow water shoes to be worn underneath, making them very comfortable for extended use and are the most common.

Fin stiffness

Soft fins
Less effort but less propulsion, suitable for long dives and beginners.

Solid fins
More propulsion and efficiency, but require a strong leg and are suitable for freediving and advanced divers.

Fin Length

  • Short fins are more maneuverable in tight water
  • Long fins give more propulsion with each stroke and are suitable for depths

Purchase advice

Try fins in the water before purchasing if possible and be aware that fins that are too large will impair your control and increase rather than reduce fatigue.

The right fin makes diving more enjoyable and less stressful, so don't choose based on appearance alone.
