Underwater communication signals: the language of divers

Site adminMonday, 1 July 2024107 views

Learn the basic and advanced signals that divers use to communicate without talking underwater.

Diving signals are a universal language that every diver anywhere in the world understands and are the lifeblood of underwater communication.

Mandatory basic signals

Okay signal
The thumb and index finger are connected to form a circle while the other three fingers remain raised. This sign means you are okay or are you okay?

Climbing signal
Thumbs up means we are going up now or we should be going up.

Descent signal
Thumb down means we are going down or I want to go down to a greater depth.

Emergency signals

  • Ear problem: a finger pointing at the ear and a pained expression on the face
  • Punching air: a horizontal hand is wiped across the neck as if it were cutting
  • I need your spare air: hand pointing repeatedly to mouth

Signaling with a flashlight at night

  • Circle with lamp: I'm fine
  • A lamp that moves left and right quickly: a problem and I need help

Memorize these signals and practice them with your partner before each dive because they could save a life.
