How to recognize ocean currents and deal with them safely to turn challenge into fun.

Marine currents are feared by many novice divers, but with proper understanding, they become something enjoyable that adds to the dive.

Types of sea currents

Surface currents
They affect the upper layer of water and are related to wind and waves and can be avoided by diving to greater depths.

Bottom currents
They form at the edges of coral cliffs and around islands and may be stronger than surface currents.

Up and down currents
are rare but pose a real danger, especially in areas with complex terrain.

How to read the current before diving

  • Look at the movement of waves and foam on the surface
  • Watch the direction of movement of marine plants in shallow water
  • Always ask your trainer or local guide

Dealing with strong current

  • Do not resist the current directly, you will exhaust yourself
  • Swim at an angle to get out of the current rather than against it
  • If you are unable, use the safety raft and wait for help

The current you understand does not scare you, but rather adds dynamism and enjoyable excitement to the dive.
